One thing was certain, that the white kitten had had nothing to do with it: - it was the black kitten's fault entirely.  For the white kitten had been having its face washed by the old cat for the last quarter of an hour (and bearing it pretty well, considering); so you see that it couldn't have had any hand in the mischief.

Paul Galloco, Snowflake, Doubleday & Company

The Snowflake was born on a cold, winter's day in the sky, many miles above the earth.
Her birth took place in the heart of a grey cloud that swept over the land driven by icy winds.

Slowly, deliberately, Starr crushed out the butt of his cigarette.  The gesture, Captain Vallery thought, held a curious air of decision and finality. He knew what was coming next, and, just for a moment, the sharp bitterness of defeat cut through that dull ache that never left his forehead nowadays.  But it was only for a moment -- he was too tired really, far too tired to care.

John Le Carre, Smiley's People, Bantam Books

Two seemingly unconnected events heralded the summons of Mr. George Smiley from his dubious retirement. The first had for its background Paris, and for a season the boiling month of August, when Parisians by tradition abandon their city to the scolding sunshine and the bus-loads of packaged tourists.

It seems increasingly likely that I really will undertake the expedition that has been preoccupying my imagination now for some days.  An expedition, I should say, which I will undertake alone, in the comfort of Mr Farraday's Ford; an expedition which, as I foresee it, will take me through much of the finest countryside of England to the West Country, and may keep me away from Darlington Hall for as much as five or six days.  The idea of such a journey came about, I should point out, from a most kind suggestion put to me by Mr Farraday himself one afternoon almost a fortnight ago, when I had been dusting the portraits in the library.  In fact, as I recall, I was up on the step-ladder dusting the portrait of Viscount Wetherby when my employer had entered carrying a few volumes which he presumably wished returned to the shelves.  On seeing my person, he took the opportunity to inform me that he had just that moment finalized plans to return to the United States for a period of five weeks between August and September.  Having made this announcement, my employer put his volumes down on a table, seated himself on the chaise-longue, and stretched out his legs.  It was then, gazing at me, that he said:

My father and mother should have stayed in New York where they met and married and where I was born.  Instead, they retired to Ireland when I was four, my brother, Malachy, three, the twins, Oliver and Eugene, barely one, and my sister, Margaret, dead and gone.

'I should feel sorrier,' Raymond Horgan says.
I wonder at first if he is talking about the eulogy he is going to deliver.  He has just looked over his notes again and is returning two index cards to the breast pocket of his blue serge suit.  But when I catch his expression I recognize that his remark was personal.  From the rear seat of the county's Buick, he stares through the auto window toward the traffic thickening as we approach the South End.  His look has taken on a meditative cast.  As I watch him, it strikes me that this pose would have been effective as The Picture for this year's campaign: Raymond's thick features fixed in an aspect of solemnity, courage, and a trace of sorrow.  He shows something of the stoic air of this sometimes sad metropolis, like the soiled bricks and tarpapers roofs of this part of town.

'Is this seat taken?' I asked the attractive young woman sitting by herself in the lounge.
She looked up from her newspaper but didn't reply.
I sat opposite her at the cocktail table and put down my beer.  She went back to her paper and sipped on her drink, a bourbon and Coke.  I inquired, 'Come here often?'
  'Go away.'
  'What's your sign?'
  'No trespassing.'
'Don't I know you from somewhere?'
  'No.'
'Yes.  NATO Headquarters in Brussels.  We met at a cocktail party.'
'Perhaps you're right,' she conceded.  'You got drunk and threw up in the punch bowl.'

YOU'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE.
Sure you have.  I never forget a face.
Come on over here, let me shake your hand!  Tell you somethin: I recognized you by the way you walk even before I saw your face good.  You couldn't have picked a better day to come back to Castle Rock.  Ain't she a corker?  Hunting season will be starting up soon, fools out in the woods bangin away at anything that moves and don't were blaze orange, and then comes the snow and sleet, but all that's for later.  Right now it's October, and in The Rock we let October stay just as long as she wants to.
